About Fairtrade Towns
To become a Fairtrade town or area you must meet the following five criteria:
1. The local council passes a resolution supporting Fairtrade and agrees to serve Fairtrade coffee and tea at its meetings and in its offices and canteens.
2. A range of Fairtrade products is readily available in the area's shops and local cafes/catering establishments.
3. Fairtrade products are used by a number of local work places and community organisations.
4. The town attracts media coverage and popular support for the campaign.
5. A local Fairtrade Steering Group is convened to ensure continued commitment to its Fairtrade Town status.

Background
Taunton became a Fairtrade Town on 7th June 2004.
Taunton Directory
The first Fairtrade Directory was produced by the Taunton Oxfam Campaigns Group in 2001 with a grant from Taunton Deane Borough Council.
The third edition of the Taunton Deane Fairtrade Directory was published in February 2004.
Fairtrade Fortnight
Each year, during Fairtrade Fortnight, stalls have been held in all the supermarkets and public meetings have been arranged with overseas speakers supplied by the Fairtrade Foundation. Street stalls have been held in the middle of town. Gradually the group has persuaded more shopkeepers to sell Fairtrade.
Fairtrade Town
In 2002 the Fairtrade Town Steering Group was set up with representatives from the Somerset Fair Trade Network, Traidcraft, Oxfam, Cafod, Christian Aid, the World Development Movement, Somerset County Council and Taunton Deane Borough Council. The group has worked hard to make Taunton a Fairtrade Town.
Support
We have had excellent support from successive MPs and Mayors in our efforts to publicise Fairtrade with many newspaper articles and radio interviews.
Trull Primary School has been actively supporting Fairtrade and a Fairtrade Group has been formed at Richard Huish College.
