After a campaign that resulted in Starbucks receiving 96,000 petitions by e-mail, fax, phone and visits to coffee shops, the company is one of a number signing agreements recognising Ethiopia’s right to control the brands surrounding its coffee beans.
Oxfam says that this could bring millions more in annual revenues, in a country where about 15 million people depend on coffee to get by.

Campaigners make their point at the G8 summit
© ActionAid
Campaign groups have spoken out against the announcements made at the recent G8 summit in Germany:
“While the G8 communiqué reaffirmed its commitment to the 2005 G8 debt deal, it did not acknowledge that the existing debt cancellation process is too slow, too limited, and comes with damaging and unfair strings attached”, commented the Jubilee Debt Campaign.
“G8 leaders are leaving Germany today having failed to do enough to shore up their wavering credibility or guarantee that they will keep their promises to Africa”, added Oxfam.
While ActionAid stated “Despite last-minute face-saving measures the G8 has failed its credibility test on Africa.”
