About Fairtrade Towns
To become a Fairtrade town or area you must meet the following five criteria:
1. The local council passes a resolution supporting Fairtrade and agrees to serve Fairtrade coffee and tea at its meetings and in its offices and canteens.
2. A range of Fairtrade products is readily available in the area's shops and local cafes/catering establishments.
3. Fairtrade products are used by a number of local work places and community organisations.
4. The town attracts media coverage and popular support for the campaign.
5. A local Fairtrade Steering Group is convened to ensure continued commitment to its Fairtrade Town status.

Web site.
Minehead (including Alcombe) achieved Fairtrade Town status in October 2004 and in doing so became the first Fairtrade resort in the West Country. In February 2005, presentation of the Fairtrade Town certificate was made by Harriet Lamb, Executive Director of the Fairtrade Foundation to the town Mayor. The occasion was well attended and Harriet Lamb spoke with enthusiasm and authority.

Background
In March 2004, a small Steering Group was formed with representatives on it from the Town Council, the Hotels Association, Minehead in Bloom, Traidcraft, Christians Together in Minehead, the Women's Institute, a retailer, and the Somerset Fairtrade Network. The group worked hard to achieve Fairtrade Town status.

Fairtrade Churches
In granting us Fairtrade town status, the Fairtrade Foundation set us a challenge to encourage all local churches to make a commitment to Fairtrade. The process is under way!
Fairtrade Fortnight
This year, the steering group held Fairtrade promotions in local supermarkets and at the local Farmers' Market, talking to and thrusting tasters and samples into the hands of over 500 customers! Traidcraft stalls were held at World Music events organised by 'Under One Sun' (see below).
