About Fairtrade Towns
To become a Fairtrade town or area you must meet the following five criteria:
1. The local council passes a resolution supporting Fairtrade and agrees to serve Fairtrade coffee and tea at its meetings and in its offices and canteens.
2. A range of Fairtrade products is readily available in the area's shops and local cafes/catering establishments.
3. Fairtrade products are used by a number of local work places and community organisations.
4. The town attracts media coverage and popular support for the campaign.
5. A local Fairtrade Steering Group is convened to ensure continued commitment to its Fairtrade Town status.

Background
The Fairtrade Town Steering Group was set up in January 2003 with representatives from Christian Aid, Traidcraft, the local churches, the Green Business Club, Meare School, local businesses, the town council and the WI market.
On 4th March 2003 the Glastonbury Town Council passed a resolution supporting Fairtrade. During Fairtrade Fortnight a stall was held in the Safeway supermarket. Shops, cafes and local churches and community groups were contacted.
Fairtrade Town status was awarded on 7th May 2003.
Shops and cafes
The number of cafes and shops selling Fairtrade has increased steadily since then and there are now 5 cafes and 7 shops in this small town selling Fairtrade products. For details of the shops, see the Mendip Fairtrade Directory.
Glastonbury has a branch of Bishopston Trading which sells Fairtrade clothes. Accessories, toys, cards, bedding and craft goods and is a member of the British Association of Fairtrade Shops (BAFTS).

Schools
Meare Primary School has had Fairtrade assemblies and project work, has campaigned for the local shop to sell Fairtrade and has held a Fairtrade meeting for teachers from other schools.
Glastonbury Festival
The Glastonbury Festival (which is actually held in the village of Pilton , some miles from Glastonbury) is asking all its vendors to sell Fairtrade products from this year.
