About Fairtrade
Who we are
Fairtrade products aim to strengthen the economic position of disadvantaged producers in the developing world. Many small farmers don't earn enough to feed their families, send their children to school and invest in sustainable development.

The Fairtrade label is awarded to products that meet internationally recognised standards of fair trade. By selling their products under the Fairtrade label, producers are able to earn additional income to invest in social, environmental and business improvements.
The Somerset Fair Trade Network is a grouping of organisations and individuals from all over Somerset who are supporting Fairtrade. The Network is run by a committee and a voluntary network co-ordinator.

Our aims are:
• To promote the concept of Fairtrade in Somerset
• To increase the awareness of Fairtrade among consumers and retailers.
• To support the work of the Trade Justice Movement.

The Network includes representatives of many organisations including the Bath & Wells Diocese, Cafod, Somerset County Council, Somerset County Federation of Womens Institutes, Oxfam, Traidcraft, World Development Movement.

We have a mailing list of over 200 supporters. We hold occasional open meetings and issue a newsletter three times a year. During Fairtrade Fortnight in March each year we co-ordinate over 50 events in supermarkets, churches, schools, colleges, council offices, farmers’ markets and other community groups.

We have published Fairtrade Directories for each of the District and Borough Council areas within the Somerset County Council. These are available on this Web site (click on 'Where to buy').
